Programme 2026

19 January – AGM

Our annual general meeting

Son-in-law of renowned American turner Lyle Jamieson.  Lyle is otherwise engaged but has recommended Mike “Ob” who has learned and worked extensively with him to demonstrate in his place.

His subject will be “Hollow forms with a void”

Rob Wilson from Dalmann Timber in Lambourn will be discussing the conservation and harvesting of woods from Catapu, the 25,000-hectare forestry concession and sawmill belonging to Dalmann Mozambique. He is passionate about responsible and sustainable forest management and has many years’ experience. The Dalmann concession is divided into 27 rotational blocks. Prior to operations starting inventories are conducted which entails detailed plotting of all viable trees, mapping roads, identifying and protecting wildlife areas, nesting birds, insect colonies and cultural sites. Dalmann Mozambique subscribes to a policy of plating 5 new indigenous hardwood saplings for every tree harvested.

Rob will be discussing the reforestation, wildlife and community aspects of wood production. He will also be bringing raw and turned samples of wood to the meeting.

We will be contacting TV members before the meeting to request any orders for wood which Rob can bring to the evening and avoid courier charges.

Evening Talk and Demonstration
Dan Tarrant from Yandles will be demonstrating the correct way to set up a band saw to get the best out of it. It will improve the efficiency, cutting ability and prevent expensive saw breakages. Members will learn about blade selection, tracking, tensioning, guide adjustments, and routine maintenance to keep their bandsaw running smoothly.
Dan, is the “resident turner” at Yandles, has achieved significant milestones in his woodworking career in 2025. He was accepted into the Register of Professional Turners, a testament to his skill and dedication to the craft. Additionally, he has earned the title of Approved Tutor from the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain, recognizing his ability to teach and inspire others in the art of woodturning.
The second part of the evening will be the choice. Preparation and use of green wood to maximise the potential for turning.

Al is a member of the Dorset Woodturning Association, chaired by Andy Matthews.

He has kindly accepted our invitation to demonstrate to us.  The subject is yet to be determined

Demo
Les Thorne needs little introduction to Test Valley Turners. He returns in 2026 with a surprise demonstration (as usual) which will no doubt be decided a week before the event. Always an interesting evening in many ways and we are delighted to welcome Les back for his annual appearance.

Demo
The Rose Engine with Arthur Kingdon.
Arthur is a member of the Society of Ornamental Turners and will be discussing the history of ornamental turning. Complex lathe development commenced in 15th century with more fantastic artefacts produced in the 16th and 17th centuries. John Holtzapffel set up a lathe making business in London in 1792 and produced amazing machines.
We will learn more about these devices which were largely abandoned in the 1940’s. Arthur has a small machine which he will bring and show members.

Demo

We welcome back Chris Parker, The Bald Wood Turner, from Lancashire. As a full time Turner, artist, demonstrator and teacher, he enjoys passing his knowledge onto others. His passion for turning is as strong now as it was when he started. He enjoys texturing turned pieces with various techniques from a simple wire brush to more advanced techniques. He finds inspiration for his textures and forms from various places but most notably from ancient ceramicists.

Workshop

Chris is making the long journey to Hampshire and will be teaching on Tuesday to four students on the club lathes. There will be an additional fee (tbc) for this event.  Please contact Philip Wray philipwray@andover.co.uk to indicate potential interest

IRD
Jeff Hornung

Back in spring 2011, after a car accident gave him post-concussion syndrome and put his creativity on hold for a while, he tried woodturning thanks to some encouragement from his wife—even though he’d never done it before. He wasn’t sure about it at first but started making pens and got hooked. As more people became interested in what he was making, he kicked off selling supplies and created The Walnut Log in 2014. Now, the shop offers all kinds of woodturning products.

Terry Smart Demo

Terry Smart from the renowned Chestnut Products will be returning to educate us on achieving the best finishes for our turnings. Terry started Chestnut Products as a van sales company, driving to various outlets and fulfilling orders from stock carried on the van. The brand became well known through exhibitions and demand grew, leading to a major change when the majority of orders were sent by carrier with Terry maintaining the personal touch with more local deliveries.
25 years later, Chestnut Products holds an enviable position of being a major supplier to both hobby and professional woodworkers both in UK, Europe and the rest of the world. It might surprise you to know that despite this massive growth Chestnut Products is still only a very small company, and the personal touch continues.
